I feel like it sounds more intense than it actually was, but two weeks ago I had butt surgery. Not the butt surgery that your favorite Instagram model got, but surgery for an infection in my butt. I had what’s called an anal fistula. If you can avoid getting an infection in your butt, I’d recommend that you do so.
Pretty much, I’ve had this infection for 10+ years and being dumb and in my 20’s, I never really dealt with it. I just learned to live with it. For the most part, it was tolerable, but it would have its flare-ups and be quite uncomfortable and painful, from time to time.
Finally, a few months ago I decided I should finally get it dealt with. It sounds a bit weird, but Kobe Bryant was the reason I finally did something about it. Kobe had just tragically died and it affected me, like it affected everyone who was a Kobe Bryant fan. His death was so sudden. He was on his way to his daughter’s basketball game, and his helicopter tragically crashed. He left behind his wife along with his other daughters.
I owed it to Lea and Coby to get this taken care of. I didn’t think it was anything so serious since I’d had it for so long and it didn’t spread or get much worse, but I didn’t actually know for sure. The responsible thing to do was to get it looked at.
Finally, a few months ago I saw a Dr. about it, and my doctor had me see a surgeon, who eventually led me to a proctologist (with a few very uncomfortable flare-ups in between).
On May 31 I had the surgery. The surgery itself took about an hour, and I recovered in the hospital for a few hours after. It took me a bit longer to get discharged because I fainted when I went to the bathroom. Apparently it’s normal after being put under. Also, I’m a fainter.
Once I got home my job was just to rest and recover. I didn’t know how long it would take for me to get back to 100%. Originally the Dr. said I’d be off for 10 days, but the sick note I got actually said 20 days. I assumed the recovery would last a few weeks.
All things considered, the surgery was OK. The first week and a half were a bit rough. I started getting better, then days 7-9 were probably the worst. The combo of the wound and being constipated SUCKED, but fortunately that all passed.
So now I’m almost fully healed. I’d say I’m around 80%-90% back to normal. I’m still not training clients or myself yet, but I hope to get back to that soon. Hopefully in a week or so.
The main reason I wanted to share this, is that I’ve had some important takeaways:
DON’T NEGLECT YOUR HEALTH
I got lucky. I was stupid and negligent with my health here, and am so fortunate that all I had was an anal fistula, and it never got to be anything worse. For all I know, it could have required more intensive surgery, or have turned into something more severe (cancer?). I want to stress for you to take care of yourself. Whether it’s an infection or something like what I had, or just your health in general. Don’t push it off. The more you push it off, the bigger issue it will likely become.
I shared a post yesterday where I mentioned Kevin Hart’s recent interview on the Joe Rogan podcast. On the podcast, Hart talked about his car accident from last year, and how he’s fortunate that he had spent so much time working out, strengthening his body (and his core specifically) before his accident. Because of all the strength and muscle he developed he was able to bounce back so well from his serious back injury.
You never know what’s going to happen. While you’re healthy now, make decisions that will keep you healthy down the line.
OUR BODIES ARE SO COOL
Just the fact that I’ve been feeling my body slowly repair back to 100% day-to-day has been so cool. Sorry if this is TMI, but a week ago going to the bathroom was pretty uncomfortable, but gradually my body has repaired itself naturally, and now going to the bathroom is normal.
I’m pretty aware of this with working out. When I work out I break my muscle fibers down, and as they repair for the next couple of days, my body heals itself. This is what happened here. My body went through the traumatic experience of surgery and has healed itself. So freaking cool.
LENNOX HILL
Last weekend Lea and I watched this new Netflix docuseries called Lennox Hill about a hospital in NYC. I was hooked.
The series follows a couple of top neurosurgeons in the hospital and everything that they deal with. Obviously my surgery was nowhere near in comparison to the type of surgeries they perform, but it gave me an appreciation for doctors and medicine. It’s not easy being a Dr. and it was good timing for me to see the show as I was recovering from my own surgery.
In closing, take care of yourself. Don’t be dumb like I was and see a Dr. if you need to. Don’t procrastinate.
